Looking for a sharer of Type 1 diabetes and RA Options

Hello everyone. I'm Veronica, living in Sussex... I'm 6I, and have 2 daughters and four granchildren all within 10 miles, so am kept busy! I have just joined NRAS as I was diagnosed with possible RA in January 2012, which was confirmed in March. I have been prescribed Omeprazole, Naproxen, Plaquenil and Methotrexate. The forum is a brilliant source of information. I am hoping to find another person with Type 1 diabetes to exchange any helpful tips with, as I have had Type 1 diabetes since 1964, and RA bring some problems with having the two conditions. I had a steroid injection in March, and the nurse gave me no warning of how badly my blood sugars would be raised for a good 2 weeks following it. Plus all the things one has to do with injecting equipment/finger prick tests is quite difficult with pesky joints. Good news is I am much more mobile and stronger than I was in January.

Hello Veronica-I think I may be just the person you're looking for!

I will be 61 in August and have had Type 1 for 50 years. (I have been awarded the Gerald Nabarro medal for still being alive I think!?!)
I am on mtx and Humira and have been diagnosed for about 4 yrears now.

And yes- you should have been warned, steroid injections are notorious for raising the blood sugar.

Nice to find you Julie, and congratulations on that medal. Are there any other hurdles ahead with the two things going on? I suppose I worry about things like getting more infections because of mtx and not healing so well because of diabetes. All that finger pricking and so on. Thanks for your reply. Hi Veronica,
I honestly haven't noticed any infections re finger pricking since being diagnosed with RA in fact I seem to get fewer infections than a lot of my work colleagues!

The only thing I have been troubled a lot with at the moment is a fungal nail infection and Athletes Foot but I don't what has caused those.

I think my biggest 'hate' with having the two is the fact that fatigue is part and parcel of both things so we have a doublke whammy! Also I tend to find that when I go to the GP with a problem it seems to be automatically put down to the RA or "Oh yes well you are a diabetic aren't you!"
I have a few operations but never had any problems with wounds healing.
When I was first diagnosed with RA my hubby was a blessing because he had to do some of my injections for me, but as my treatment got going I can now do those myself again.
It's very early days for you and it can take a long time to get the right meds.

Julie that all sounds reassuring, thanks for your help. My husband was personal maid, chief cook and bottle washer for a few months. I felt so pathetic not being able to pull up my trousers or hold the shower towel up, but it caused a few laughs between us! Kind regards Veronica

Hi Veronica

I don't know if I count but have steroid induced diabetes and take insulin, and now am on victosa as well as the metformin

I use a pre filled pen for novomix
that's so I don't have to fiddle about with the refills.


I get annoyed really with the diabetic checks because I find the medical services care far more about the diabetes checks!

Dear Jenni,

If you use insulin equipment you count!

I tried a very easy injecting device...not a pen. It is more bulky, pre-filled, and easy to push the large plunger. Called InnoLet. However I need half doses quite often as I am very sensitive to insulin and InnoLet only dispenses whole units, so now I have an easier pen than my old type, called Novopen Echo. This has a push-down screw, so doesn't need twisting and twisting to put a new vial in.

Good luck with your clinics. What do they ask you about? I find there is no overlap between the 2 faculties.

Yes I really can't complain about diabetic clinics apart from the fact that they treat mew as if I couldn't possibly manage my diabetes without them! Each time they advise me that if my glucose is high, then raise your insulin etc. etc. Am I rotating my injection sites, am I sticking to a helthy diet etc etc-----erm yes! I know all this after 50 years!

Like you say I don't think there is much overlap between clinics but I think that is the case with any conditions, but there really should be.
